The Bloody History of One Particular Type of Awning
Awnings are not normally associated with blood and gore. But there is one type of awning that has seen more blood than the average computer game player will ever see.
The awning being mentioned is actually called a velarium and this awning was used in the Colosseum. This awning was a colossal awning and it was made of sailcloth. The Velarium was absolutely massive because it covered 1/3 of the arena and the Colosseum could hold 70 000 people.
The awning was very similar in design to the sails used on ships so therefore sailors were used to operate it. Canvas, ropes, pulleys and 240 mast corbels were placed around the stadium. A corbel is a bracket on the wall face, and one sailor for each corbel was required for smooth operation of the awning. Thankfully today’s awnings from Shaydee Awnings are simple to operate and more technologically advanced.
Rock Music and the CBGB Awning
Awnings are popular amongst many business owners and club owners are no exception. Awnings can make any building look glamorous or unique. Many awnings also have the name of the company printed on, thereby adding to the visibility of the company’s brand name which attracts more customers.
The CBGB & OMFUG Rock Club is a famous club in Manhattan. The Ramones, Blondie, Joan Jett and Talking Heads were just some of the many groups that played at the club, with many more bands passing through on their tours. The name means "Country Bluegrass Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers". What a mouthful!
The awning of the CBGB is made from white canvas and is stretched over a dome frame. A squared top valance finishes it off nicely. When the club closed down in October 2006 the awning was taken down and moved to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame so that this iconic reminder of the American Punk movement is preserved.
